Reflections

Trying out an artsy concept of capturing reflections with my Fujifilm X100 and tele-converter.

I’m having a little fun with my Fujifilm X100 and the Tele-converter.  In this outing, I decided to try the X100’s spot metering and aim for high-key photography while also having a little fun with filters.

Fun with TCL

It’s a Tele Converter Lens a friend of mine turned me on to that changes the focal length of my Shorty’s (Fujifilm X100) 20mm, to a 50mm lens.  The magnification is 1.4X without much chromatic aberrations, but does produce pincushion distortion. With a good image editor, you can easily correct those anomalies.

In this instance, I took it out at night around the neighborhood. The added weight helped in balancing the camera and made it easier to shore up when snapping at long shutter times. Plus, I had a little fun with filters, too.

Fun with Fujifilm X100

These snaps came from my X100 shoebox of images.  I’ll go out with my cameras, snap a lot of images, then let them stew for a time before I sort them out.  I like doing this process as it pulls me away from that day to view the images again with a totally different eye.  I’m also having fun with filters, too.

From the shoebox

I had some extra snaps taken at Santa Monica beach in California.  I’m using the Nikon D800e with a 24~85mm f/2.8D zoom lens.  And yes, I am still having fun with filters.

Experiments in Photo Editing

I took these snaps with my Nikon D800e DSLR using a 24~85mm f/2.8D zoom lens.  I totally dig my beast with my go-to zoom lens. Although with its hefty combined weight, the balance feels good to me.

Where is everyone?

It’s amazing how weather affects us.  I took a walk to the beach with my beast and 24~85mm f/2.8 lens. A gray day with a slight chance of rain. This made it ideal for some black and white filtering with images.

Venice Beach Afternoon

Hey! FUN WITH FILTERS!

I took a walk along the boardwalk on a bright sunny afternoon in Venice, California.  I had the beast with me along with a 24~85 f/2.8 Zoom lens.  Considering all the madness going on in the news, I needed time away to recharge my coping mechanism.  It looked like everyone here at the beach felt the same way, too.

Life is a beach

This is from the shoebox.  A collection of snaps that I forgot to add to other posts. On the other hand, FUN WITH FILTERS! I took these snaps with the beast and a zoom lens at Venice Beach, California. It was a great day to have a little fun in the sun.

I came out to find my shadow.  Apparently a lot of people did the same.  Fun times with filters at the beach.

Sunny days and foggy nights

Took to the streets with my little X100 on a day full of surprises.  It was gorgeous outside, blue skies, clean air, a perfect day for a walk.  But in the distance, I could see a wall of fog slowly roll in.  I do love sunny days, and I do love foggy nights.

Sadly, this place was closed. I was hoping for coffee and waffles. But not today.

The café was closed as well.  So I decided to head home and make tea.

Beach showers

I took a walk to the beach to clear my head and take a break away from internet and TV. It was beautiful outside and perfect for finding ideal subjects to photograph. I decided to have a little fun with filters, too.

Spring is in the air

Oh how spring has sprung.  An oops-a-daisy time to remind us of ideals, and hope.  To let us be goofy, and roll with laughter.  Today was a good day to acknowledge that.  Hope your day was good.

Raindrops keep falling on my head

I went out into the rain with my X100.  I wrapped the little guy up in a zip-lock baggie, duct taped the opening around the lens, and stepped out to brave the elements.  It kind of worked out, until it started pouring again.

I was on the East side of Downtown Los Angeles and grabbed a coffee near the Arts District Co-op.  I had my X100 with me and walked along the alleys and sidewalks of this small community of old warehouse buildings.

After the rain

We’ve had some good rainfall lately.  As much as we love the rain, it’s funny how badly we handle a rainy day.  In California, we either drive our cars in the rain like glaciers approaching the tundra, or stay indoors until a sliver of golden sunlight cuts through the gray. I drive a Prius, so no ticket violations for drag racing on my record.  So this is what it looks like around my neighborhood after a brief shower. These snaps taken with my Fujifilm X100.

Finding Bliss

It was a lazy quiet afternoon the other day after all that rain the past few days.  I took the beast out for a walk by Venice Beach and got lost in the sunshine.

Took the long way home

Went for a walk and wound up staring at the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway).  Yes, I do love romantic walks along the beach…but not in January. It was crazy cold outside.  With this set I was going for a more painterly effect using blur filters and color boost.

It’s cold here.  And it’s gray outside.  So naturally I went for a walk around the neighborhood with my beast and 50mm lens.  The settings were f/5.6 at 1/40 with a 640 ISO.  Plus I had some fun with filters and borders.

New Year like last year

I had to drink all that wine and chug down a bottle of Mezcal to get this shot.  My advice for being this dedicated to your art is to use a tripod. And put the drunk toad to bed.

Happy New Year everyone!

Fujifilm X100 f/4 @ 1/15 with 3200 ISO.

Night time in Santa Monica

I had my little Fujifilm X100 out with me the other night.  It was a quiet stroll around the neighborhood and by golly it was cold, too.  I had set the aperture to f/4 @ 1/15 using 3200 ISO.  Because it’s a small camera, bracing it was easy.

Cold night in Santa Monica

Enjoying the cold weather?  Not too many people were out strolling the sidewalks, but for a few brave souls on bicycles and skateboards.  I did enjoy the walk.

Pico Blvd at night

I took a walk around the neighborhood with my Fujifilm X100.  My settings were f/4 @ 1/15 with the ISO selected to 3200.  I used whatever was stable to hold the camera still when taking these snaps.  On hindsight, because I was stabilizing the camera using either a lamp post or parking meters, I could’ve lowered the ISO.  Next time, then.

Santa Monica Twilight

I do love sunsets.  But the best time to hang out in Santa Monica is during twilight.  I shot with my beast and a 50mm f/1.4 prime.  I set the ISO at 1600 using two aperture settings–2.0 and 5.6.  I used whatever was stable to rest the camera for long exposures with f/5.6.  Then with an f/2.0 aperture and setting my shutter to 1/60, I braced my elbows for hand-held shots.
